Brookfield firm faces lawsuit claiming church scam
By Mike Johnson of the Journal Sentinel

The District of Columbia attorney general's office has filed a lawsuit
against a Brookfield leasing company and several other firms that
accuses them of engaging in a scam that bilked African-American churches
out of thousands of dollars.

The scheme involved placing interactive computer kiosks in the churches
that were billed as being a no-cost investment for congregations but
wound up costing thousands, the lawsuit contends.

"The scam was designed to illegally obtain hundreds of thousands of
dollars from congregations across the country by fraudulently inducing
them to accept computer equipment on the representation that it was
'free of charge,'&ensp" the lawsuit says.

"In fact, the congregations unwittingly were induced to sign leases that
obligated them to pay tens of thousands of dollars for equipment that
did not work, and the value of which was a small fraction of what the
defendants sought to compel congregations to pay," according to the
lawsuit, which was filed this week in Washington.

Named in the lawsuit are the Brookfield company, United Leasing
Associates of America; Balboa Capital Corp. of Irvine, Calif.;
Chesapeake Industrial Leasing Co. of Baltimore; Television Broadcasting
Online Inc. of Washington and its subsidiary Urban Interfaith Network
Inc.; and Willie Perkins and Michael J. Morris of Television
Broadcasting Online (TVBO).
