subject: back fire

I've got a question that has bugged me ever since it happened.
I have a 460 with a 4bbl carb and electronic ignition in my Ford F-250.
Yesterday while traveling to work at 65mph the engine suddenly lost
power and then violently back fired so loudly that it shook the truck and
made the guy tailgating me back way off. Then it came back up and drove fine
for another five miles when I shut it down. It hasn't done this since, does
anyone have any clue what happened?
Also it died on me twice today but started right back up after pulling over
and taking it out of gear and using the key. My guess for this is a loose
wire going to the ignition or the fuel filter is getting plugged up.
