Yes, something in that direction. :-) I have a Java/Swing GUI which talks
to a Java server (currently RMI - could use Corba or something instead)
which serves Fido messages from a PostgreSQL database. The server also
tosses incoming pkt:s into the db and creates new pkt:s with new mail.

The client needs the server to operate, and it was never intended to run
standalone. The idea is to be able to use the system from many places
(home, work, school) and keep all messages & config in the server. It
would also be possible to let "points" use the client to connect
to the server, so that they don't need to install and configure a lot of
strange software in order to use Fido. (Java applications can be
automatically downloaded and run via Java WebStart.)

It might be possible to create a standalone client, but there is no SMAPI
for Java so I guess that would take some work. I didn't want to reinvent
the wheel so I decided to use an existing database server via JDBC instead.
Works great. :-)
