The Giant and the Con are actually two different mines. The Giant's last
owner before it folded was the infamous Peg Witte of Royal Oak Mines.
The Con has had several owners since the old days: Cominco, Nerco and
now Miramar and is still going after 58 years. It is finally running low
on ore and is scheduled to close in 2 to 3 years. And that will be the
last of the gold mines and the end of an era.

But Yellowknife is diversified now and can handle the closure. We have
government, diamonds, northern transportation and tourism.

The old time public health nurses sure lead a colourful and
adventuresome life.
