I can't say if it is true or not, never having used anything but SQ386, but
(as the scientist used to say in the old movies) I have a theory:

SQ386 uses a DOS extender which must query the amount of memory available.
Windows being a virtual memory system can easily lie, giving the DOS
extender the impression that you have much more memory that you do. This
might cause SQ386 to allocate space that causes it to swap extensively.

The regular SQUISH is more sparing of memory use, so it wouldn't be seduced
by the promise of virtual megabytes.

If you have a 4 or 8mb machine, then my theory may well be true. If you
have buckets of memory, then I'm probably wrong and have no answer.
