Pardon my jumping in, but I think there may be some confusion here.
You can have pretty much whatever you want in your tank.  Provided
they don't get to big for the tank when they are full grown.
Another consideration is that some fish are only compatiable with
fish of the same temperment.  For example certain cichlids are only
compatible with other cichlids of the same temperment.  This is due
to the fact that some cichlids are verry agressive and only well
armoured or fish that are equally agressive.
