While tripping merrily through the mail, Alan Morrison was overheard
CH> Studebaker was a different company. They did use the Chevy small
CH> block from 1964 to the end of their run in 1966. Avanti Motor
CH> Company continued that after Studebaker went belly-up.
AM> I believe there were relationships at various times between
AM> Studebaker, Nash, Hudson, Packard, and AMC. As you say, the Avanti was
AM> also a Stude until the company ceased operations in 1966, later Avanti
AM> moved to CA and became its own company, continuing use of the Chevy
AM> V8's. I believe they were still alive in the 80s, and by then had used
AM> 327's, 305's, and 350's.
Nash merged with Hudson to form American Moters ca:1954/55 (from 1955 to
1957 Hudsons were "rehashed" Nash models).
Studabaker and Packard were different companies which merged ca. 1956-57.
(again, 1957-58 packards were rebadged Studabakers.)
The Avanti was introduced in 1962, the last Studabaker made in the US
was 1966. I believe the Avantis were produced in Canada for a bit
longer, and Studabaker MAY have been purchased by White-Consolidated
(White trucks).
After the Avanti was discontinued, a US company was formed to purchase the
rights to produce the car again, and I BELIEVE they're still being made
(although I also have heard the company went bankrupt at least once.)
