JB> RJT>> Newer stuff seems in large part to include the regulator _in_
JB> RJT>> the alternator, I haven't dealt with that much. Though I might
JB> RJT>> have some reason to with my current vehicle..

JB> JB>> my car's like that, well was. the regulator died, I'm using an
JB> JB>> external one now. but seing as it uses the same terminal to sense
JB> JB>> the voltage and get its power to run the field I can't make my
JB> JB>> warning light work correctly, but I've got a voltmeter so don't I
JB> JB>> need the warning light much.

JB> RJT> I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking at or not. There are
JB> RJT> times when I have a whole bunch of loads on and all of a sudden
JB> RJT> the voltage will drop, to the point where my "check gauges"
JB> RJT> light comes on.

JB>Rainly night city driving does it to me, wipers and two headlights while
JB>spendind most of my time at idling the motor while at traffic lights....

JB>I drive round in a lower gear, and apply the park brake and run the motor a
JB>little faster when stopped... seems to solve it for me.

You haven't solved a cotton picking thing. You have just
circumvented the problem! Why not actually FIX the problem
by replacing the alternator or finding the root cause of the
problem?

Jay

JB> RJT> I know that the alternator was replaced once before I got the
JB> RJT> car, so it's not factory original or anything, OTOH I do have
JB> RJT> over 160,000 miles on the car (about 30,000 of those since I got
JB> RJT> it). There's also something in that area that's making a bit of
JB> RJT> bearing noise, I'm not sure just what yet

JB>if it's the altenator replace it before the beearings fail... I had that
JB>happen to me it ruined the altenator's rotor and stator...

JB> RJT> How did you figure that the regulator was your problem?

JB>The altenator stopped charging the battery, but when I took the regulator
JB>out of the circuit and applied 12V to the field terminal (here there's an
JB>external link) it stareted charging again.
