Prototype of new safety chair (24-Oct-98) - The FIA announced this week that a working prototype of the new Formula One extractable safety seat will be presented at the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday 30 October 1998, immediately after the drivers' press conference scheduled for 15:30. This type of seat will be mandatory for all Formula One cars as from 1st January 1999. The seat has been designed and developed jointly by Lear Corporation, Stewart Grand Prix and the FIA. The most important feature of this seat is the ability to lift the driver out of the car while he's still sitting in the chair. By attaching four hooks to the seat, safety marshals can easily lift up in case of a serious accident where the driver is unconscious or badly hurt. The presentation will be attended by Dan Jannette, President Technology Division of Lear Corporation, Jackie Stewart, Prof. Sid Watkins and Charlie Whiting, Formula One Race Director and Safety Delegate. --- Msged/386 4.20 beta 4* Origin: Blizzard of Ozz, Melbourne, Australia (3:635/728.4{at}fidonet) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 633/267 |
