JD> BG*I'm suprised nobody bit on the merc / omc/ etc... challenge yet.
JD> They all are good...if you take care of them....However I personaly
JD> own a Merc..but in the past I have had two JohnRudes (Sorry Dave) and
JD> got great service out of them.
RS> Well, in years past, it seems to me that Mwecury was the Engine of
RS> choice in the Hydroplane Racing area. Seems as though the Quicksilver
RS> Lower end had something to do with the Mercs winning most of the
RS> races. Or did I just dream this up? I know that back in the 1920's
RS> and 1930's that the difference between Johnson Sea Horses and the
RS> Evinrudes was just as dramatic a difference as there was between
RS> Fords and Chevrolets and the rest of the bunch which were also rans.
In years past, I too believe you are correct. I replaced a (75hp) 64'
rude with a (110hp) 71' merc and improved the gas milage from 45
minutes per 6 gallons to 1 hour per 6 gallons.(on the same boat) Now
I believe they are all quite reliable. I wanted a Merc, but the cost
was another $2000, so I settled for the (140hp) Suzuki and have been
quite happy with it over the past 5 years.... what else can I say.
Regards Joe
