to treat New York as a radioactive horror. Now residents of those
towns are motivated to move to the City.
The curtailment of service on the IND 8th Av line, from the fire
of january 23rd, ended on 20 April. By then, a temporary signal block
was in operation over the quarter kilometer of dead line around
Chambers St station to allow moving 60 trains per hour in each
direction. Current schedules offer only 30, but the capacity is now
fully restored. Certain train movements in the affected area are still
restricted, but all those required for regular are available.
The original destroyed signal room is under repair, a task that will
take a year or so.
The New York Yankees in mid April announced plans to replace the
ham-handed remodeled stadium with a new 'House that Ruth built'. The
new arena will resemble the 1923 edifice with, of course, mod cons, on
a vacant plot a block north of the present facility. The old stadium
will then be demolished and the land used for parking towers, improved
subway access, and a new MetroNorth rail station.

NYSkies, the maillist for home astronomy in the New York region,
became NYSkies Astronomy, Inc, on 8 April 2005. NYSkies simply
outgrowed its informal status as 'just a maillist'. It evolved into
the amateur astronomers association for the region and thus required a
corporate character to better work with agencies, companies, clubs,
universities, and the like in support of home astronomy. The maillist
continues as is, with no special changes; 'NYSkies' remains the common
name for all usual purposes.
Our neighbor club, Amateur Observers Society, on Long Island
celebrates its 40th anniversary; see its entry for May 21st. While
this is really not a 'public' event, NYC Events is read by so many
astronomers -- both home and campus -- that I include it here to help
AOS spread the word around. This gathering is becoming more of a
convocation of earlier-day astronomers from the City out of the mid
and late 20th century! AOS, by the way, began in as a breakaway group
from Amateur Astronomers Association, after a fit of arrogant heavy-
handed behavior of its leaders at that time.
The newest eruption of tyranny at Amateur Astronomers Association
Inc comes from its Observing Group. NYSkiers Richard Rosenberg and
John Pazmino agreed at its March 26th meeting that the OG is off-
limits for the abusive and hostile climate of the club leadership.
Richard is the new chair of the OG, following from outgoing chair
Bruce Kamiat. A few days later, Richard decreed that 'OG' really means
'O'Gara', for the scheme of intimidations and threats of club
president Michael O'Gara. Richard explains:

  John,

When you came to the Observers Group last Saturday I told you that
you could stay if you did not write about attending the meeting in
such a way as to attack or cause harm to the AAA. You agreed, if
  grudgingly.

Now I read in NYC Events under Astropolitics a description of your
attendance that insults the leadership ("abusive and hostile
climate"), and by implication the AAA as a whole. While there is no
negative commentary towards me, that it not the point, nor is it
what I asked for. I regard the AAA -- the organization -- as
important to me and take umbrage at any attacks at it. I do not
attack it publicly -- I attempt to improve it from within. I have
to regard your comments as breaking the agreement we had. With
sadness, I must say you are no longer welcome at the AAA Observers
Group. If you do attend, I will force your eviction.

  Rich'

  Dan,

John Pazmino showed up at the OG meeting during John Delaney's
presentation. I told John (Pazmino) that he could stay for the
meeting if he agreed not use his attendance as anti-AAA propaganda.
He grudgingly accepted. This was the only agreement that actually
  occurred.

John's commentary distorted this and in fact violated the conditions
of the agreement. As a result I have sent John an e-mail notifying
him he is no longer welcome to attend OG sessions and would be
evicted if he attempted to do so.
