We were there last fall. I didn't find it much different than San Antonio,
without the Gulf. I was disappointed when I saw the Gulf water up close.
It's not as clean as the Pacific waters on San Diego beaches, but it's a
lot warmer. During summer the Pacific water is in the mid to high 60s,
sometimes as high as 70 degrees F...The Gulf waters are 85 degrees and a
person can wade out for 100 yards and not get his belly button wet.

You would probably find Texans just as friendly.

One of my wife's favorite activities, if you can call it that, is to find
a place where people pass thru, traveling and or dining. She'll sit there
and observe people to her hearts' content if I didn't make her move on.
