The area in Michigan I'm from is heavily dependant on General Motors in
terms of its economy as about 80% of the population work for GM (at
outrageous wages too, I might add).

Anyway, during the bleak times when people weren't buying GM cars but
were going for the cheaper Japanese imports, it's amazing how much
outright hatred there was for the Japanese in general...  the
politicians played up on it too... "You're in this sorry situation
because of 'them'..."

The only thing different about the tensions between Americans vs
Japanese and Blacks vs Whites was that there were no local Japanese
people to discriminate against in person.
