McNealy calls for airport security
Darrin Barnett
MARCH 26, 2003
SMARTCARD technology should be used to beef up security in airports
and other public places amid current global concerns, the head of the
world's largest computer network company said.
United States-based Sun Microsystems chief executive Scott McNealy
said current procedures such as photo ID checks by authorities simply
were not up to scratch as they could easily be forged.
"There's no authentication whatsoever," Mr McNealy told a Sydney
business luncheon.
"I would like, when I walk into a public place, for them to know
who's there and have it verified on a separate database.
"I'd love to walk into an airport with my auto ID chip and the
security guard, from a secure data base, gets a big picture of
my face and compares it."
Similar technology could also be used to track baggage, even when
it had gone to the wrong destination, he said.

Mr McNealy was addressing the Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce.
