The Lakotas were probably smart enough to send in a light wave because they
knew about that rifle and the approximate time it took to reload.  The
light wave was followed by a heavy wave and Custer's fate was sealed. 
Still, I don't think I'd want to take on a bear without something
equivalent to an M1.
