Mosley turns the screw on Imola

(28-Oct-98) - Motorsport boss Max Mosley has turned up the pressure on the
Italian authorities to prevent prosecutions in the event of a serious
accident.

Mosley has written to the mayor of Imola, the town that hosts the San
Marino Grand Prix, to say that if a dangerous sports law is not passed his
race could lose its place on the calendar.

The letter comes in the immediate wake of the FIA giving Imola only
provisional status on the '99 calendar.

Italy is the only country in Europe in which there is a real risk of
prosecution if there is a serious injury or fatality in a race. The FIA
wants the country's law revised to reduce the risk faced by teams.

In response to a letter questioning Imola's provisional status Mosley said.
"You will understand that without movements on the dangerous sports
law, the teams are very wary about the prospect of racing in Italy."

The letter is considered the next stage in a stand-off between the FIA and
the Italian authorities. Most observers think the race will eventually take
place.
