express viewing pleasure of Bill Wunsch:

I believe the vertical speed was suggested.  Damage to the instument might 
occur from breaking the the glass, and this one was considered the lest 
useful.

 CM>     that the vertical speed would indicate in reverse?
I don't recall those details.  That was thirty-five years ago...
