True fact! The results from programs like LightWave and Maya are so
realistic that they are used for virtual movie and TV sets. You may think
the hero is striding through the vast fantasy palace as the camera tracks
him, but he is actually walking in a blue or green soundstage. The camera
angle on the virtual set precisely matches the angle on the hero, and the
lighting matches as well. Saves millions of dollars on production costs.
3-D is particularly easy for photographers, since lights, lenses, depth of
field and all, work exactly like their hardware counterparts. Being
industrial level tools, LightWave, Maya and Softimage are quite pricey.
I have used Imagine since way back in Amiga days - in fact I believe I sent
you a rendering of a room, way back then. Vue D'esprit and Bryce are
primarily a terrain programs - landscapes - but it can do other things as
well and are quite inexpensive and very easy to learn. Corel develops Bryce
now. Poser focuses on character animation using supplied models. Also quite
inexpensive. There is a thriving third party market for Poser characters,
clothes and props, and extensions. One of the members of our Animation SIG
demonstrated program last meeting where she typed some text and a Poser
character quoted it with total lip sync and completely realistic facial
gestures.
Much fun.
