I wanted to ask you if I could canvass the echo for a charity project that
I'm starting. I wanted to see if any of the others in the echo would be
interested in joining with me to make up some really cute little cross
stitched dolls. I was planning to donate the finished dolls to homeless
shelters and domestic violence shelters here in Canada and in the US. I am
compiling a list of US battered women shelters and homeless shelters along
with the list I already have for Canada. I am also going to be canvassing
local stores like Walmart, FabricLand, and Lewiscraft to see if they'll
donate supplies. I was hoping to act as a clearing house for the finished
dolls and will organize and supply the patterns for the dolls. I will be
offering two different cross stitched dolls to make. One is a tiny 3" doll
with a pocket-like bed that can fit in a child's pocket which I'll be
distributing to the homeless shelters and a cross stitched topsy-turvy doll
for the women's shelters. I'm also considering including a knitted and a
crocheted doll pattern so that any crafters who would like to participate
can.
I had been thinking a lot lately about how sad children who are living in
these shelters must feel not having a home of their own or their own toys
because they've fled an abusive situation or had lost their homes because of
poverty. I wanted to find a way to make things a little easier for these
almost forgotten children, especially now with the Christmas season only a
few months away. I went through my patterns and found an adorable little
doll that's easy to make and cross stitch and is small enough to fit into a
child's pocket that might cheer up the homeless children and is tiny enough
to be carried with them all the time. I have always seen knitted
topsy-turvy dolls, but just recently aquired a pattern for a cross stitched
doll. I was hoping to distribute these dolls to the women's shelters so that
the children that have fled their homes could have something of their own to
hold close to them.
Please let me know what you think of the idea and whether I could either
organize a stitching group to make up the dolls or if I could post to ask
anyone if they have any leftover fabric (cloth, linen, or AIDA type material)
that they could send to be used for the dolls. Also can you please tell me
who the moderator is for the Cross Stitching echo so I can ask their
permission to organize a stitching group through them too.
Thanks in advance,
Tammy McCann
