---------------------snip-------------------- GM> RJT> I encountered that in my truck, a while back, and wondered what the GM> RJT> heck was going on there. Why would they corrode away like that? GM>People used tap water in their radiators -- this was of course in GM>the days of cast iron engines! The salt in the water would attack GM>the whatever was in the mix and dissolve parts of it. What was GM>left would just crumble. Here, our water comes from an underground aquifer in high limestone content areas. This water contains lots of impurities - one being a high content of alkali (I think that's what it is). These impurities will attach to the ends of the radiator cooling tubes and eventually block the tubes. It is standard procedure here now to use either distilled water or highly processed water that has all the impurities removed and 50% antifreeze. No more clogged radiators!
