I've had them use both. My doctor in SD had one with two tubes filled with
Mercury mounted on the wall. I never did figure out how they read that
one. Using it also requires that they use a stethascope to listen to your
heart and count the beats while he also counts your heart beat while
counting the seconds with his watch.
The inflatable sleeve also has a stethascope that the machine uses
to count your heart rate.
I have no idea how they calibrate either one, but they surely must.

RN> I've had this one for so long I'd hate to break in another.
That's what my dad said right after he got home from 3 months in intensive
care because his doctor screwed up. The only thing that saved his life was
my sister's vigilance and a helicopter ride to the University hospital in
Madison, WS.
All three of us advised him to find a younger, more knowledgable doctor,
which he did.

I sometimes thank my lucky stars that I chose to persue a trade before I
was too old to go back to school. That trade supported us for my entire
life.
RW>> You'd have to pedal it pretty fast to do that. :o)
RN> Something is wrong with Force's funnycar?
John Force pedals his car all the time, as do most of the drivers who're
always in the top ten. He taught his daughter how to pedal too.
RW>> Nahhh. His mother would take it away from him and use it herself.

RN> Let's hope for his sake that the prices for those machines are
RN> affordable.
They're building them now, so they should get cheaper as time marches on.
