A lightning detector can detect lightning further away than you can see and 
detect cloud to cloud lightning that may not be visible. Severe storms are 
easy to detect and forecast, but a small Texas storm cloud that comes up 
quickly may or may not have lightning. I've fished lite rain before that 
looked like it should have had lightning, but did not. I was just wondering 
if anybody had ever gotten any use out of one on a boat. The ones I am 
talking about are the hand held models that many sports teams use now. Your 
right though, common sense is the best way to stay out of trouble.
