Stewart to promote young hopeful

(03-Sep-98) - Stewart Grand Prix could continue its "Staircase of
talent" to the very top, by elevating its newly crowned Formula 3
champion Mario Haberfeld to the F1 squad.

Brazilian Haberfeld, who set records for the greatest comeback in the
history of the championship - winning from 54 points down - looks likely to
sign as test driver for the Milton Keynes based team. Haberfeld has already
had a drive in this year's Stewart-Ford SF2, and his F3 team-mate Luciano
Burti will also get to sample the car in the near future.

Jackie Stewart and his son Paul, who run the Grand Prix team, operate in
many of the junior formulae and their aim has always been to take a driver
right to the very pinnacle of the sport. Jan Magnussen, who won the F3
title for Stewart in 1994 raced for the Grand Prix team last year, but was
sacked earlier in the season after proving a disappointment.

Of Haberfeld, Jackie Stewart said, "we believe he is talented, and if
he graduates to F3000 next year then it would make sense."
