I worked on them, stuffing the wheels with new waste after soaking it in
oil so the wheels wouldn't squeek.  A pain in the neck operation and I can
agree with you that the width of the car in ratio to the undercarriage is
about the distance you say.  I had to do the same thing to the Army tank
cars that came into the yard, after sandblasting the interior.  I was red
from head to toe after that.  (-:
