[part 1 of 2]

The following home astronomy activities in the NYSkies territory,
mainly the commuting ring enclosing New York City, are operated by
various organizations. A couple cultural items of special importance
to City astronomers may be included.
Please know that altho NYC Events confirms the listed events, they
are subject to change by their sponsors. Check with the contact. For
events which missed NYC Events, please check the message area in the
NYSkies Yahoogroup forum. To join NYSkies, send a blank email to
'nysky-subscribe{at}yahoogroups.com'.
You may ask for the next issue of NYC Events thru our email
'nyskiesastronomy{at}earthlink.net' if you didn't yet join the forum.
Hours are Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Perseid meteor shower
 -------------------
The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks this year on Friday 12
August. The display of shooting stars is best seen in the owl to dawn
hours on the 13th, making it a bit rough for a public event.
Regularly scheduled public viewing on Friday night may continue into
the next morning for the Perseids. If you are gung-ho, check with your
local astro center for its in-house viewing plans. Chances are, you'll
be welcomed to take part.

Mars is closest ever in human history!
 ------------------------------------
Bullfeathers! If you're seeing news articles about this once-in-
human-history Mars proximity for August 2005, you're reading recycled
items from 2003! Many news media, even normally reliable ones, are
circulating the SAME MATERIAL AGAIN with the actual year and day-of-
week left out, as if the news is current. Mars does approach Earth
this year, but in October-November and not quite as close as in 2003.
See the Mars timetable under August 1st.
