| subject: | Giving Tithes and Offerin |
R> A friend of mine said the tithing was brought about in the old
R> testament and had nothing to do with money but of a giving of a 10% of
R> the crops to give at the temple for a celebration of Gods blessing in
R> the abundant crops raised.
R>
R> I guess it could be argued that in that day. People used what came
R> from there land as income for example the fruits, veggies, spices and
R> such.
Generally they converted their crops' value for the year into gold to carry to
Jerusalem on the annual fall pilgrimmage for the Feast of Booths (Sukkot)
And the term "tithe" has us thinking they gave 10% of their
"increase" each
year to the Temple, when the actual amount given to God was 30% (first tithe
for supporting the Temple & Temple workers(the Levites), 2nd tithe to support
the widows & orphans, and a third tithe for the poor in general, which was,
basically, a big feast held at the end of the agricultural year for all to
participate in!
R> to do it with a cheerful heart. That no set amount is warranted. Paul
R> has says you reap what you sow in the amount you give..
Paul also ordered, I forget exactly where, that the saints were to gather on
the first day of the week(Sunday) and collect their tithes and offerings to be
sent to Jerusalem to help the Jews there!
