Hello Everyone,
I am new to this conference, although I have been sitting back and
reading
the messages for a few weeks.
I am working on taking a basic open water course. Something I have
wanted to do for a long time. Finally I will have the funds, but mostly the
time to take the course(s) and then the time to enjoy the sport.
So here we are, I have a couple of questions, which have probably been
asked before so forgive me for being redundant.
I have gone to most if not all of the dive shops here in New Orleans,
some
PADI, some NAUI, and one "SSI". All of the shops seem to be okay, some
appeared
more "sales" oriented, which I understand I mean they are in business to
provide
a service and make a living.
However the SSI instructor seemed more genuinely enthusiastic about the
sport and what he is doing and no high pressure sales.
Question time:
I understand SSI has been around about 15-20 years how do they rate
compared to the "BIG" guys? I mean looking at the course curriculum they
appear
to be as concerned with safety as everyone is and so on.
If I take a open water course with SSI and then later on I want to take
a
course that they don't offer like PADI's "Medic First Aid" will PADI
recognize
my open water rating from SSI?
Equipment, well what can be asked about this subject? I have tried on a
lot of toys at the different shops some I liked, some I didn't. Some brands
weren't comfortable at all. I guess this will have to wait until I get in
he
water and try some pieces to see what fits and feels right.
I know this is a bit long winded however I hope you will chalk it up to
my
enthusiasm.
Thanks.
Charles.
