Hello Scott
I agree that a dolphin is a creature we can eat. But lets
consider something. Is it not true that since we interact to a
certain degree with dolphins, we begin to relate to them differently.
It is clear that they give us much pleasure when around them. Its
easy to understand why many object to killing them for food or any
other reason. I for one would hate it very much if I accidently
hooked a dolphin while fishing. And would do everything I could to
        free it unharmed.
It seems to be a natural thing for humans to react differently when
dealing with certain species of animals. I would not have any quams
about cutting up a nice tuna, mackeral, or rockfish and eating away!
But killing and eating "Flipper" would not be too palatable to me.
Now your probably saying that I am some sort of animal rights idiot.
Far from it. I think that humans have dominion over the animals and
they should be used in a responsible way for our benefit. But having
dominion means using our god given sensibilities as well. My mind
asks
me "Why do we need to eat dolphins?" Surely there is plenty of other
things to eat. And if the other things are not available, then
survival might mean eating a dolphin. But I think that we can leave
them alone for a while yet.
I guess that some people, myself included, seeing the enjoyment that
dolphins can bring us, don't look at them as something to eat. Just
as you wouldn't look at your beloved pet dog or cat as food.
        (I hope!)
Now if the chips were down, they also might have to be on the menu.
But remember, just because some people feel repulsed by the thought
of eating dolphins, lets not think that there is something wrong with
        them.
I have not had the pleasure of diving with them yet, but would savor
an experiance like that, not on the end of a fork, but in memmory.

        Good diving!
