Hiking club?  Ever tried the Blue Ridge Parkway, up around Roanoke VA?
It's lovely and it's a federally protected area - and plenty of mileage
too.  While your there, you could visit the REBOS (Spell it backwards) 
club and catch a meeting.  (Can you tell I used to live in that area?)
