"the fidonet protocols" is not a very explicit set. Certainly BinkP supports 5D
addresses. And type-2.2 packets (FSC-45) support 5D addressing, though they are
not widely used. Most other combinations and packets and protocols do not
support domains (5D addresses).

That's cool. 5D packets have been around since 1990, before even I joined
FidoNet. They just never really found their need.
