Many years ago, when I watched "Bonanza", I noticed his name in
the credits and always thought that was an odd name. It's origin could be
anything, but I dug up the following:

===CUT===
The boy's name Pernell \p(e)-rne-ll,
per-nell\ is pronounced per-NEL. It is of Latin origin, and its meaning is
"country bumpkin". Also possibly related Peter via the Greek
"petros", meaning "stone". Made familiar in the 1960s
by actor Pernell Roberts. See also Parnell.

Last time I saw him in a movie was the western/comedy The Sheepman, with
Glenn Ford and Shirley MacLaine, who is slightly older than me. (-:

Roger
