While it's possible to place a virus in a .gif (or any file, for that
matter), it would serve no purpose. A picture file does not get executed -
it's interpreted, yes, but the resulting data is not executed but simply
displayed on screen.
In order for the virus to be decoded and executed, you'd already have to have
some means of doing this resident. Since NetScape (and any other
browers/viewers) won't, this would have to be the virus. Catch-22.
