First thing that you will need is a static IP address. So using an AOL, or 
CIS or MSN is not going to work. 
Second you will need a virtual modem driver. It looks like you are using the 
DOS version of Maximus. You have three choices, run the BBS under Windows 95, 
run the BBS under OS/2 or Run the BBS under Windows NT (preferred ). There 
might be some way to do this under DOS, but I am not aware of it. 
From there it's pretty easy. Install the Virtual Modem and point Max at it, 
and then have at it. After doing this myself I've found a few "bugs" in the 
supplied mex scripts. I am sure that you too will find some interesting 
problems as you sort through the mess. I am no expert at it, but I'd be happy 
to assist in any way. I can at least point you to all the Windows NT Virtual 
Modem Drivers
