Hmm the only thing I can think of was an old coin-op game called 1942
very much like Raptor, only designed for coin-op use and it used a "1942" 
look for the planes and -most- of the weapons.
If your talking about a PC game...  There were so many scrollers a few years
ago that it could real hard to nail down the one your thinking of.
( I was going to say, just call him up, but that's probably not such a great 
idea. )
