I think the OP meant their historical raison d'etre was rendered moot a
quarter century ago.
The technology, of course, requires them. But there's no technological reason
why all of Fidonet today couldn't be tossed into a single zone and zones, as
you mentioned, be repurposed to distinguish othernets.
In some sense, in fact, even within Fidonet zones aren't precisely tied to
geography any more. I'm in Taiwan, but being fed from Australia. The
technology doesn't care.
