Don't fret, Miles. The threads eventually always come back to humidity.
In fact it isn't even really about humidity but rather the methods of
measuring it. No one has mentioned it but I think microwaves could be
used to measure humidity as the water vapour content of the air alters
the impedance and attenuation of a signal. In addition, no one has
mentioned the gas chromatograph but there are still so many methods left
to explore, for example a high voltage ion wind changes with humidity.
etc...

But I'd prefer to talk about something I learned of recently concerning
the Supermarine Spitfire. Apparently, according to this radio announcer
/ airplane enthousiast, a tidbit about the Spit was recently
declassified which helps explain the great success it had during WWII.
Turns out the Spit was equiped with a radar receiver. I was a bit
surprised by this news but in looking at a picture of a cockpit interior
I do see a largish circle which could have held a round CRT but missing
in the picture. I had always assumed it was some navigation equipment
that went there but not a CRT! There were a lot of secrets even in WWII.
