Yep it is a floating rear end and the bearings have to come out to get the
drums off. But getting the axles out is easy, 8 bolts and a bucket (to catch
the gear oil) and the axles slide right out. My Impala on the other hand just
has a standard read end and the drums come right off although I don't like
the fact that the tires have to come off to adjust the brakes. There is no
hole on the back side of the backing plate to adjust them with. Perhaps I
should take my air hammer and fix this.
