A&RA> Subject: Another JEWEL in the crown of
A&RA> discrimination
A&RA> Dear Federationists and friends,
A&RA> I realize that this incident took place on a local scale, but I am so
A&RA> mad that I think that I need to share it with all of you.
A&RA> Today my wife and I went shopping for groceries at a
A&RA> chain in the Chicago area named Jewel-Osco. Just as we were getting a
A&RA> cart and proceeding to start shopping, a cart-boy physically stopped
A&RA> us and said to my wife (who is sighted) that if I would prefer I could
A&RA> sit on a bench at the front of the store and wait. (as if I didn't
A&RA> have a tongue to speak for myself or could hear) Well, my wife, being
A&RA> stunned and rather shocked by such a comment said, "No. My husband
A&RA> would prefer to be with me," in a most indignant tone of voice. The
A&RA> cart-boy responded, indigantly, "Well, I'm sorry, I just thought he'd
A&RA> be more comfortable."
A&RA> The only reason we didn't turn on our heels and leave the store is
A&RA> that we needed to make this particular shopping trip and had a limited
A&RA> window in which to do so. This incident, obviously,
A&RA> was all we could talk about during the whole shooping trip. By the
A&RA> time we left the store, we were pretty angry. However, our anger
A&RA> increased when we discovered that this bench where I would be "more
A&RA> comfortable" was outside, in an area where the outdoor temperature
was,
A&RA> at that time, in the low 40's.
I certainly understand your anger and hurt at this incident. It has happened
to
all of us in one form or another, unfortunately.
We must educate people one person at a time.
It sounds like the act of an individual, not an institutional act on the part
of
the store.
What would you have the store manager do, fire the guy, give you a $100 etc.?
His response and action seems appropriate to me.
