=-> Quoting Thomas Kraetschmer re: jazz guitar - fusion:
TK> Anyone in here who knows more about Larry Coryell?
I first heard him in about 1972 and saw him perform live in about
1974, but I haven't seen him again since then. I do have quite a few
of his albums, though. He's an extremely talented guitarist, but
during the 60s and early 70s he seemed to be a bit inconsistent, both
on record, and in live performance. I would particularly avoid the
albums on which he sings. ;-)
Some of his early work is jazz/rock fusion. The best of these are
probably _The Real Great Escape_, and _Introducing the Eleventh House_.
Among my other favourite Larry Coryell albums are the acoustic duets
with Phillip Catherine on the albums, _Splendid_ and _Twin House_.
Those two teamed up again on a wonderful tribute to Django Reinhardt
called, _Young Django_. The album also features Django's original Hot
Club Quintet cohort Stephane Grappelli on violin, and the superb bass
work of Neils-Henning Orsted-Pederson.
I can highly recommend any of those albums. Unfortunately, I haven't
heard anything that Coryell has done since the early 1980s. I believe
that a couple of his recent albums have received favourable reviews,
but I can't offer any first hand opinions beyond the ones above.
Cheers,
Martin
