There have been a few instances when I was driving one vehicle or another 
that popped a brake hose,  and the net effect,  once I hit that point,  was 
that I had *no* effective brakes,  dual system or not.
I suspect that there's perhaps a little leakage between the two halves,  or 
perhaps in some cases there's an "equalizer" valve of some sort (seen this 
one one or two of 'em),  or something similar.
You didn't mention use of the parking brake in there.
