TR> SK> And then I'd pay the silly little fine. It's as if you think
TR> SK> disobeying a cops order would land me in jail...I doubt it. But
TR> SK> if I did..well, I'd at least still be true to my convictions
TR> SK> (no pun intended).
TR>It probably would land you in jail,
And, as I said, I would still be true to my convictions.
Unjust laws SHOULD be broken.
TR> and you wouldn't be doing anything noble or patriotic, just the
TR> opposite.
In your less than reasonable, and reasoned, opinion.
TR> You would be obstructing justice at the very least,
What justice would that be? Being forced from my own vehicle under
threat of imprisonment, or immediate physical punishment, so it can
effectively be stolen and used in a hazardous manner is justice?
TR> nothing to be proud of.
Law and order doesn't mean bending over.
That's my pride talking.
If you think giving your rights and freedoms away is noble...then enjoy.
A nice little communist, fascist, or totalitarian state may be your
preference, but I'd rather live free. Too many people have died to
create a free society for me to agree with giving away our freedoms
,without a fight,...all in the guise of "justice" (or victim's rights).
And this free society is STILL evolving. The fight ain't over.
Some reactionaries would rather we go back to a more heavy handed
government, all in some demented idea that this would make the U.S. a
safer, honorable, and more free and just place. All I can say is BULL!
Authoritarian rule is authoritarian rule...no matter what the
motivation.
If an actual emergency were to need my involvement I would get involved.
The point is, _I_ will decide what is worthy... _I_ will help to my
fullest if _I_ see a good and just cause. A person in a uniform is just
a person in a uniform..no better and no worse. They definitely don't
have any legal or moral basis to decide when or what I should do in such
cases. And they shouldn't be given license to be above the law...and
neither should the law. The Constitution is the law. I believe it has
been perverted in this case (commandeering). So, I'll stand against an
unjust law. THAT is something to be proud of! To fight injustice is
GOOD, not bad. Sorry, I shant be a sheep-person. I WILL NOT be deprived
of my Constitutional rights just because some hot dog has watched too
many Dirty Harry movies.
You see the whole REALLY silly part of this whole "you'll go to jail if
you don't surrender your car to the cops" is that I THOUGHT THIS COP WAS
IN A HURRY! Obviously not, if he (or she) has time to arrest me. Why
doesn't he (or her) take YOUR car...or someone else's...or go back to
their squad car and call for back-up. Arresting me does ZIP to catch the
perp.
If you think cops car-jacking people is a good tack to catch a car-
jacker (for instance)...is raping someone to catch a rapist O.K.? How
about murdering someone to catch a murderer?
This isn't too far off base (although I'm obviously being
rhetorical)..because the police sell crack to people and then bust those
people for buying it. Rather crazy, since selling drugs is a far more
criminal act than buying them. But this kind of thing shows an "above
the law" mindset. A mindset that is dangerous.
Police are NOT above the law, and they AREN'T the law (well, at least
they SHOULDN'T be). They are empowered to protect and serve the PEOPLE.
The people are the boss, not the police...and the Constitution is the
law. The basic tenet's of it are pretty damned noble. Yes sir, I like'm,
because they address and codify basic freedoms for all of us. To subvert
those basic tenet's for simplistic and selfish reasons make us all less
free.
