And all you need is a $30 meter on the output instead of three
10c LEDs.

I wasn't suggesting that you should change it. I was just
considering the logic of the manufacturer in fitting the tach in
the first place. As I said, a "sporty" looking dial on the dash
has more customer appeal, even though it didn't do much more than
the LEDs.
