BAR sign GT Champion

(27-Oct-98) - British American Racing have signed newly crowned GT Champion
Ricardo Zonta to partner Jacques Villeneuve in the team's inaugural season
in Formula 1.

"As a young, dynamic, success-orientated team, BAR was searching for a
driver that would fit, in terms of goals and calibre, and Zonta matches the
profile perfectly," said team boss Craig Pollock.

"I am delighted to have secured the services of Ricardo Zonta, who at
only 22 years of age, has shown the talent and maturity of a driver of far
more experience."

Zonta was equally delighted with the announcement: "As a driver new to
Formula 1, I could not have asked for more than to join a new team that
wants to start winning as soon as possible."

"I am thrilled to be driving alongside such a successful and
experienced driver as Jacques Villeneuve, from whom I am certain I will
learn a great deal."

Zonta admitted that he had been offered a chance to enter Formula 1 last
year but had decided to wait: "Last year I had the chance to move up
with a smaller team, paying some money. I preferred to wait for a year and
get as much experience as possible."

That experience has included testing with McLaren and Jordan. McLaren rate
the Brazilian highly and still hold an option on him should they wish to
take up his services at a later date.

Rumours that the 22-year-old would sign for Formula 1's newest team have
circulated for some time but the former F3000 champion had also been linked
to Sauber and Minardi.

Zonta took the FIA GT drivers' title on Sunday at Laguna Seca when he took
his fourth pole of the season before partnering Klaus Ludwig to the pairs
fifth win of the year.

"It was fantastic. We have worked very hard this season. It was
difficult for me in the beginning, but then the results started coming. I
am very pleased for Klaus and the mechanics," said Zonta.
