I know that rule all too well!

But the Riley had such a kick that the handle would fly right
around in a full circle and smash into the back of your hand if
you didn't pull it away quickly enough!

The first car I owned had VERY low compression. I never measured
it, but from the size of the space in the head and the length of
the stroke it couldn't have been more than about 4:1.

On that car, I would hold my left hand over the intake to the
carburettor to choke it while I wound the the crank handle around
and around until the engine fired.

It kicked back on me once when I forgot to retard the spark, not
really a kick, more a fairly strong push, with no danger of broken
bones
