So far, from the few replies in this thread, it seems rather unanimous that
none of us feel that Samba is fabulous - Which really makes me wonder who
Bob has been talking too.

FTP is OK, but it doesn't have the same drag 'n' drop from the desktop
usability that the SMB shares have.
Example, we have all of our MP3 files stored in a directory on one of our
Linux boxes. We share this directory using NFS shares with our other linux
boxes, as well as SMB shares for the windoze boxes. This way we can play
these MP3 files using any media player on any of our machines (Windoze or
Linux). This wouldn't be possible if FTP was our only option as we'd need
to FTP the files from the linux box to the windoze box before we could play
them.
