Dear Wendy,
    Sure you can use your coffee table.  Just place a small lamp on the
floor [ if you have to lay it down, prop it so that the bulb or globe
doesn't touch your carpeting and scorch it].  What i use is a tilted piece
of glass fronted picture frame, witha  lamp behind it.  It might be best to
turn the frame backwards so that you are pressing against the frame not into
the open side.  I had mine fastened in like a window.  The props are a
simple 2x4 frame. It is all disassemblible to put away when i go on to some
other craft.
