That's exactly what I said. No big deal if your film is in carry on rather
then checked baggage (though any effect it has can be cumulative). I have
had no problems with film up to 800 speed.
The checked baggage X-Ray machines are too powerful, as I understand, even
for 100 speed film for film. I wouldn't chance film in checked baggage.
I used to request hand inspection, but when improved machines came on line,
I just let it go through (carry 0n). Never have had a problem.
I am wondering if the sports shooter in question had an attitude that
sparked the response by the Germans. When I flew in England and in Holland,
I asked for hand inspection, and the inspectors politely refused. Oh well,
I thought. The film went through the Carry on X-Ray, and upon processing
here at home, the film looked OK. I have read that X-Ray machines in some
parts of Asia and in Russia and Eastern European countries are another
story altogether. There, you might as well put your dinner through at the
same time for a nice hot meal.
The man maybe should have FedEx'ed his film home.
