McLaren fight back

The 30 minute Warm-Up session for today's Luxembourg Grand Prix started on
time at 9h30, with scattered clouds, a dryish track and air temperature of
11C and track of 13C.

Everyone was in and out of the pits for the first few minutes as they
checked their cars in race configuration after the overnight work by the
mechanics.  Most drivers were using intermediate wet tyres, as the track
still had some moisture in places.

In the first 10 minutes: Irvine takes 1st at 1m 23.917s, M.Schumacher
nearly hits Irvine as he crosses the track into the pit entrance as a
charging Irvine flashes past on a fast lap, R.Schumacher takes 2nd at 1m
23.928s, Hakkinen takes 1st at 1m 23.041s, M.Schumacher takes 1st at 1m
22.830s.  Coulthard takes 1st at 1m 22.474s.

At the 10 minute point the top six were Coulthard (1m 22.474s - 6L),
M.Schumacher (1m 22.830s - 5L), Hakkinen  (1m 23.041s - 6L), R.Schumacher
(1m 23.157s - 7L), Alesi (1m 23.398s - 6L), Wurz (1m 23.533s - 5L).

By now most of the drivers are on dry tyres. In the next 10 minutes:
Hakkinen takes 1st at 1m 21.662s,  Hill shortcuts over the grass, Wurz
takes 2nd at 1m 22.404s, M.Schumacher takes 1st at 1m 21.644s, M.Schumacher
takes 1st at 1m 21.565s, Irvine takes 3rd at 1m 22.299s, Wurz takes 3rd at
1m 22.138s..

At the 20 minute point the top six are: M.Schumacher (1m 21.565s - 9L),
Hakkinen (1m 21.662s - 8L), Wurz (1m 22.138s - 11L), Irvine (1m 22.299s -
10L), Coulthard (1m 22.474s -
6L), Fisichella (1m 22.549s - 8L).

In the final 10 minutes: Coulthard takes 1st at 1m 20.933s, Alesi takes 6th
at 1m 22.278s, R.Schumacher spins backwards into the gravel, Hakkinen takes
2nd at 1m 21.466s, a small slide messes M.Schumacher final lap, he takes
4th at 1m 21.515s, Villeneuve ends his session on the grass, Hakkinen takes
1st at 1m 20.396s. To end the session M.Schumacher comes into the pits very
fast, pulls into his pit (like for a race stop), locks up and slides a
short way, frustration or testing pits stops?.

At the end of the session the top six were: Hakkinen (1m 20.396s - 15L), 
Coulthard (1m 20.915s - 15L),  Fisichella (1m 21.362s - 14L), M.Schumacher
(1m 21.515s - 15L),  Irvine (1m 21.636s - 14L),  Wurz (1m 21.870s - 19L).

The top three times in each track sector were: S1: Hakkinen (29.137s),
Coulthard, Fisichella, S2: Hakkinen (35.053s), Coulthard, Fisichella, S3:
Coulthard (16.157s), Hakkinen, Fisichella.

The fastest three exit speeds in each track sector were: S1: Hakkinen
(274kph), Coulthard, Trulli, S2: Coulthard (295kph), Wurz, Hakkinen, S3:
Hakkinen,(242kph), Coulthard, Irvine.

One second covered the first 3 places and two seconds the first 10.

By the end of the session the temperatures had dropped to air 10C and track 11C.

Hakkinen Wins

The McLaren of Mika Hakkinen won an, at times, very exciting Luxembourg
Grand Prix today at the Nurburgring in Germany. Joining him on the podium
was Michael Schumacher, 2nd, and McLaren team mate, David Coulthard, 3rd. 
The rest of the points winners were Irvine, Frentzen and Fisichella.  This
result leaves Hakkinen leading the very close Drivers' Championship by just
4 points over M.Schumacher.  In the Constructors' Championship, McLaren are
now 15 points in front of Ferrari.  The race for third has spread out a
little, with 2 points separating Williams to Benetton and Benetton to
Jordan.

At the start of the race, poleman M.Schumacher was not so quick off the
mark and teammate Irvine (2nd on the grid) managed to take 1st place before
the first corner.  Hakkinen and Coulthard were behind the two Ferraris at
the first corner and were followed by Fisichella, Frentzen, Wurz,
Villeneuve, R.Schumacher and Hill.  Irvine made a mistake at the chicane
and M.Schumacher was back into the lead.

M.Schumacher started to pull away as Irvine seemed to slow a little, by lap
13 the top ten were: M.Schumacher -> 6.900s-> Irvine ->
0.300s-> Hakkinen-> 3.200s-> Coulthard ->
1.000s-> Fisichella-> 4.600s-> Wurz-> 4.400s-> Frentzen->
0.800s-> R.Schumacher ->4.800s-> Villeneuve->4.700s-> Hill.
Hakkinen then passed Irvine and began the chase to Schumacher.

M.Schumacher pitted (in/out 26.9s) on lap 24 while 5.2s in front of
Hakkinen. Hakkinen pitted (27.1s) on lap 28 and rejoined only just in front
of Schumacher.  For the next 10 laps Schumacher was right on the gearbox of
the McLaren but could not pass.  Eventually Hakkinen started to open a gap.

On lap 47, M.Schumacher pitted (in/out 25.8s) while 2.2s behind Hakkinen,
the Finn pitted on the next lap (in/out 24.8s)  and stayed ahead of his
rival.  At the end of lap 50 it was 3.5s from Hakkinen to Schumacher.

As they raced to the end Schumacher was never far behind the McLaren, but
no mistakes were made and he stayed second.

Several drivers took trips through the gravel including R.Schumacher,
Fisichella and Salo.  Rosset suffered a major engine failure and the
resulting oil on the track caused excitement for the others.  R.Schumacher
retired into the pits with a damaged brake disk.

The best three times in each track sector were: S1: Hakkinen (29.076s),
Coulthard, M.Schumacher, S2: Hakkinen (35.168s), M.Schumacher, Coulthard,
S3: Hakkinen (16.095s), Coulthard, Frentzen.

The top three exit speeds in each track sector were: S1: Hakkinen (276kph),
Coulthard, M.Schumacher, S2: Hakkinen (297kph), Fisichella, Wurz, S3:
Coulthard (243kph), Hakkinen, Irvine.

After the race Mika Hakkinen (1st) said that he was pleased to have beaten
Michael Schumacher and it put him in a better position than he was two
hours before.  He said that the advantage now gained in the championship
will really increase the motivation of the whole team.  When at the start
of the race he found himself behind Irvine with Schumacher pulling out in
front, he said that he was not worried particularly as there was a long way
to go.  At that time he just tried to put more and more pressure on Irvine.
Eventually the Ferrari had some problems so he passed.  When asked if he
took a big risk coming out of the pits quickly in front of Schumacher he
said that driving flat-out you must always take risks.  The important thing
is to make sure you control the risks.

Michael Schumacher (2nd)  was asked if losing his pole position to team
mate Irvine before the first corner was a Ferrari tactic.  He said it was
not, he could have tried to pass around the outside, but decided to stay in
second, the important thing was that he was in front of Mika.  Eddie later
made a mistake at the chicane and he managed to regain the lead.  He said
he could not go as fast as he wanted, as there was some problem with the
balance of the car.  He was very surprised to see Mika exit the pits in
front of him at the first pit stop, but as it turned out McLaren were the
stronger on the day.

David Coulthard (3rd) was asked if there had been a problem with his car on
the grid, mechanics had been working with the fuel system just before the
start, he said not and that final adjustments on the grid were part of the
plan (!). When asked about the setup of the car, he said that they had been
concerned about the weather earlier, but had been told it would be dry and
so had used a good dry setup.

Eddie Irvine (4th) said that early on in the race his car started to
oversteer and it gradually got worse as the tyres began to wear.

Jacques Villeneuve (8th) said they had had some problems they were trying
for a one stop race, but did not have enough fuel in the car so had to stop
again.  When asked about problems with the Goodyear tyres which other
drivers had mentioned he said that he had no problems with his.

And so 5 weeks to the final round in Japan, can the "Red Barron"
catch the "Silver Arrow", stay tuned to this channel.....
