If you click a link with the middle button (the wheel) instead of the
regular button, it opens in a new tab. If you hold the shift key down while
middle-clicking, it also becomes the active tab.

I don't know how to get it to open automatically, but all bookmark
sub-menus, including ones that appear in the toolbar, have "Open in
tabs" at the bottom that will open all the items in the menu in
separate tabs.
