The *vast* majority of Intel 8088's are NOT 80C88's (the C means manufactured
with CMOS process, as opposed to the NMOS process of the original chips).
99.9% of XT's out there do *NOT* have an 80C88.
You are right when you say that a copyright date of 1981 is a good indicator:
the copyright date was updated *because* the chip is a new design - the
reason for the new design? the SS bug is fixed!
All non-Intel 8088's have the bug fixed. ie Siemens SAB8088, Fujitsu, NEC,
AMD, etc. The reason: Intel didn't start allowing other manufactuers to
produce 8088's until after the SS bug was fixed:
Siemens: '86
Fujitsu: '81
AMD: '83
NEC: '81
Early 8088's by Intel are first identified by the fact that their package is
made of Ceramic. Later chips are made of plastic. There are plenty of ceramic
8088's that do have the bug fixed, however... the plastic ones are just a
later process again.... I have plastic intel 8088's copyrighted '83.
Sorry to crap on a bit: This information is posted for everyone's benefit.
